B1164 Great North Road
Points To Ponder
Back in the 1960s, the B1164 was the original A1, The Great North Road. Then, they built a dual carriageway bypass for this section and called the original road the B1164.
If you are heading north or south on the A1, this is a great diversion that breaks up the monotony of mile-munching.
The road is wide, runs mostly through the countryside and has great cross-views. As most of the traffic uses the A1, the road surface is in good condition, and typically traffic is light.
The Tuxford Windmill, at the north end of the run, is a great alternative to the services at Markham Moor on the A1. The windmill, last time I was there, had superb waistline-expanding cakes.
Eight miles isn’t much, but compared to the alternative on the A1, it is worth the diversion.
