Was riding the B115 in Austria excellent route planning or just luck? Iād been in Slovenia and was heading for the Black Forest Region of Germany and wanted to ride as much of Austria as time would allow. I spotted the Kalkalpen National Park on the map and knew the scenery would be good, so I decided to go that way.
Put succinctly, the B115 in Austria is a cracking road to ride, and when you arrive at the end, turn around and ride it again.

Points To Ponder
Riding the B115 was a happy accident. I’d seen the Kalkalpen National Park on the map and thought the scenery would be stunning, and headed that way.
Arriving at the Traboch at the southern end, the B115 runs for 75 miles through the National Park, exiting the park at the town of Steyr – or thereabouts.
Along those 75 miles, there is a mountain pass to climb through the Northern Limestone Alps, plenty of villages to stop for refreshments and a never-ending supply of excellent quality tarmac and invigorating bends.
You are in the wrong place if you are looking for a tight, twisting goat track, and in any case, you’ll want to be able to look at some of the scenery rather than picking your way through ruts and potholes. theĀ
The road does close or requires that you have snow chains/tyres in winter, but other than the temperature dropping as you climb, it is open to bikers most of the year.
Unlike the B500, the fun police have not been out and nailed a stupid speed limit on it, but I did spot three groups of Polizei hiding in the bushes, all enforcing the speed limits on the edges of towns.
There is a biker-friendly B&B – Gasthof Koglerhof – a few kilometres south of Steyr. Peaceful surroundings and well worth a nightstop.
