B107 South to Lainach
Points To Ponder
The Grossglockner in Austria is one of those roads that is on most riders’ bucket list, along with the Stelvio Pass (Italy), the B500 (Germany) and Vrsic Pass – The Russian Road in the Slovenian Alps.
Less well-known and easily missed is the B107, which starts as you exit the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse heading south. As it is the only road you can take south, perhaps it doesn’t need a route, but the road is often missed by riders entering at the Kaprun end, riding to the Kaiser Franz-Josefs restaurant, and then returning back across the mountains to Kaprun.
If you are looking for the most hairpins for the toll fee, then that is the route to follow. Yet the views riding south on the B107 are nothing less than staggering, and the road an absolute delight.
The B107 would be epic in either direction, but going south is downhill, making it easy to flow with the bends, which, if you have ridden the 36 hairpins between the toll booths a few times, can be a welcome change.
At the bottom is the town of Lainach, where you will find Haus Elena, an excellent B&B who kindly let us use their garage to change the chain and sprockets on the KTM 1290 – You can read that story here.
To return north, you can ride the Grossglockner again or take the B108 and play tunes through the tunnels. At 10 euros, it is the cheapest of the two options, but sadly, there is only one hairpin on that route.
If you have a route that you would like to share, get in touch and with the Editor, and we will do our best to include it. Download, ride and enjoy. What could possibly go wrong? All the motorcycle touring routes are GPX 1.1 version files.
All of the motorcycle touring routes are provided “as is” without guarantee, liability or any assurances. The lawyers said we had to include that sentence. All we can tell you is that we had an excellent time planning and riding them.
